what are pitted fork stantions???

The fork stantions are the 2 stick like yokes the front wheel is fitted to. The top part of the yoke is like a telescope which goes in and out of the bottom bit. When the bike isn't properly cleaned the top bit gets rusted and gets pitted. As it goes in and out of the bottom bit it damages the rubber gasket at the top and causes oil to leak. This is very dangerous because it affects the handling of the bike in a big way.

A damaged rubber is as bad as it gets and has caused many a young lad and lass a worrying time.

To clear Rust oil or spit on tinfoil and rub hard will rid your chrome of surface rust and resurrect your chome again, I remember my dad had me do that when I was a kid on the spokes of my push bike, and it worked too.
as for Pitting get milled and recoated as new seals on pitted surface is waste of time and money.
